    Description

This polychromed piece made from a single piece of wood measures 60'' in length x 17'' width x 5'' thick. The arched sculpture is a depiction of a particular moment in Hindu mythology when Vishnu saves Gajendra -the king of elephants from the clutches of a deadly crocodile. Vishnu - one of Hindu Trimurti deities consisting of Brahma- the creator, Vishnu - the preserver and Shiva - the destroyer, is shown in this sculpture being carried by Garuda - a mythical half human- half bird ,and accompanied by Lakshmi - the Hindu goddess of wealth and consort of Vishnu. The lower part of the sculpture is a square frieze with two dancing apsaras -celestial beings holding the lotus leaf base.
The South Indian temple sculpture is in very good condition and dates to the latter part of the 20th Century was made to probably fit within and arched alcove but can be easily directly mounted on a wall.
